ANALYSIS OVERVIEW

The analyses that are preformed for this project will primarily be done in order to define a design parameter for the bridge. The analyses are centered around the analysis of trusses to find the internal stresses of the wood based on the target loading of 20 kg. A general safety factor of 5.0 was chosen to allow for imperfections in the material to occur without causing the bridge to fail under the target load. The other analyses that will need to be preformed are pertaining to the articulation of the bridge and the motor that will drive that motion.

This analysis was completed to find the minimum diameter required for the axels that the pulleys will rest on for the articulation system to raise the roadway. The mass of the sting used was assumed to be negligible, the pulley to be frictionless, and the tension in the to be equal to the mass of the roadway. The minimum diameter for a stainless steel rod was found to be negligible so the diameter was set at 2.0 mm.

The purpose of this analysis was to find the minimum road thickness to avoid a failure when the distributed load is applied. The loading was assumed to be able to be modeled as a point load with the loading being symmetric. Shear and moment diagrams were created to find where the most stress will be concentrated to find the thickness. The minimum thickness was found to be 0.0026 mm so the design was set to be 1.0 mm because it is widely available.
